Literacy Around the World: Knowledge is Power

Literacy is one of the most powerful tools humanity has ever created. It is not just about decoding letters on a page; it is the foundation of learning, communication, and participation in the modern world. Today, we can celebrate remarkable progress: more than 7.1 billion people worldwide are literate. Schools, community programs, and international cooperation have expanded access to education in ways that would have been unimaginable a century ago.

Yet, beneath this progress lies a stark reality: over 770 million adults—nearly one in ten people—still lack basic reading and writing skills. This challenge is not spread evenly across the globe. Women represent almost two-thirds of the world’s illiterate population, and entire regions, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, continue to face significant barriers to education. Poverty, conflict, lack of infrastructure, and social inequality all play a role in keeping literacy out of reach for millions.

The consequences are profound. Illiteracy often limits employment opportunities, reduces access to healthcare information, and weakens the ability to engage in civic life. It perpetuates cycles of poverty, making it harder for families and communities to break free. On the other hand, literacy empowers people. It gives children the chance to dream bigger, adults the tools to advance in their careers, and societies the strength to innovate and grow.

Investing in literacy is not a luxury—it is a necessity. Expanding access to education, improving the quality of teaching, and addressing gender disparities are crucial steps toward creating a more just and inclusive world. When we support literacy, we are not only teaching people to read and write; we are unlocking potential, sparking creativity, and shaping brighter futures.

The global challenge of illiteracy reminds us of a simple truth: knowledge is power, but only if it is shared by all.
